Abstract Skies II & how to use them

Image
Hi,
ever wondered how to add some painterly clouds and textures to an dull monochrome sky?
Use textures that feature subtle cloud structures!
I made 12 textures, that have clouds in them and I used them in the following images:

As you can see in the before images one obviously needs skies with a lot of negative space to fill. So these are either clear blue cloudless skies or skies overcast with indifferent clouds.
Erasing parts of the texture with a soft brush on a layer mask is always a good way to get rid of parts, that you don't want to have a texture on.

Apart from using the MULTIPLY blend mode I also often use the texture in NORMAL mode and create a soft transition between the landscape and the sky by applying a gradient on a layer mask, like I used on Dangerous Waters.

Any questions? Don't hesitate to contact me.

These textures are available on my site here:

Painterly Images with Lightroom Presets and Textures

Image
Hello, over the past years I have posted many tutorials concentrating on the use of textures. I know, that I often mentioned that I process my images with the help of Adobe Lightroom before I load them into Photoshop to treat them further with textures. I finally have put together my first small set of Lightroom Presets that helps you creating impressionistic painterly images combining these presets with some of my textures.

You can get these in my CreativeMarket shop here: Impressions Lightroom Presets

Short Tutorial - Making of CANVAS DREAMS

I spent a week in the Normandy, France in May, where I took this shot of red poppies in the dunes with view of the beach. This photo seemed a perfect candidate to show you how to easily create a painterly picture with the help of one of the presets as well as the texture included in this set.

It wasn't a particularly bright day, rather cloudy and windy and the photo turned out as a bit dark.

I often process every picture individually withou…

Two Dark Images & May Flash Sale

Welcome to my re-designed blog...

I know, I have neglected this blog and I thought, that changing the layout and adding a SHOPs page ,where you can have easy access to my print shops and textures, would be a good start to get into posting on a more frequent basis.

So, let's start.

I wanted to show you two new pieces, that I have been working on today and yesterday evening.
I am always trying something new, new techniques or new interesting imagery. Often there is not much planning involved. In the case of these images I went through unprocessed material and then started to work following my imagination. One thing led to another and here we go....

In the first picture "One Tree Rock" I deleted a lot of elements with Photoshop's content aware spot healing brush and also used their content aware move tool to place the rock in the middle of the image. I used some of my textures from the Scriptures-Pack

In the 2nd picture I reflected the abandoned railway with its trees a…

Using textures as backgrounds - Cyber Week Promo still on

Image
Hello people,

I usually use my own textures and the ones I purchase from other artists to process my photographs, e.g. giving them a more painterly look or texturizing Negative Space.

Only recently I began to use them more as backgrounds for some more abstract works or still lives and such. So this short post's purpose is to show you how I created one of my abstract plant designs.

Have a look at this gif

For years I have a small Cycas palm plant that once in a while sprouts new leaves. A few years ago I captured these and forgot about the images. But recently I came across them while going throw my archives and decided that they might make a nice decorative abstract.

So I cut them out and copied the leaf I cut out and arranged them on three different layers. I didn't want to simply reflect them, so no symmetrical composition.

After some time of trying different textures I decided on Sky Dive as the main background. As these leaves seem to reach out onto something I had the ide…
